Description: he Revolution Continues
I don't care what others say about whatever other shoe, this
shoe was the epitome of innovation and creativity. It was Tinker and Mike at their finest. This
shoe didn't just revolutionize the Air Jordan line it revolutionized the entire
shoe and possibly the
fashion industry. I can hear it now, "Kev you talking crazy," but I'm not. As I take you through the Air Jordan V you will find yourself going "Man he's right." Yep, I know.
So where do we start? How about colors? The
shoe was released in the typical colors, wht/red, blk/silver. But for the first time since the very first Jordan it was released in a color that had nothing to do with the Chicago Bulls. They dropped wht/grape ice/emerald which you could call a
fashion oriented color. After the Vs MJ and
Nike continued to drop colors that were I guess you could say non basketball colors. Then came a special edition wht/blk/fire red which had the "23" embroidered on the heel. Up until then only MJ had "23" on his regular color (wht/red & blk/silver) Vs.
Okay so where does revolution begin? The revolution begins at the outsole. Yes the clear outsole with the visible Jumpman underneath it. Wow BFD. Yes it is and was a BFD. Think about it 1990 was over ten years ago? pre-Iverson Question, pre Air Jordan XI, pre-Air 180, hell, pre-Prada. Yep, old schoolers will remember when The Fresh Prince or Duane Wayne put their feet up on that coffee
table and you saw the Jumpman on the sole. Recognize.
The revolution continues with the clear
mesh on the side but is definitely emphasized but the reflective tongue with the red Jumpman embroidered into it. Once again remember this is 1990, a time where 8 bit Nintendo ruled, a time where Michael Jordan was only 27, a time where you could still go out to the lot and buy a new Honda CRX. These days, (10 years later) its just all the rage to have reflective lining on your
jacket or
t shirt.
Clothing and
shoe companies use 3M to make
shoes seem high tech or eye catching. I hate to be the one to break this to them or you but its already been done.
And finally we have something that was
cool to me then and is STILL
cool to me now. The
lace toggles. I don't care what anyone has to say.
Accessories are
cool. When I went to buy my GI Joes or Transformers I wanted the one with the most and the coolest
accessories. Still held true when I bought my AJ Vs then, still holds true now. How well did the
lace toggles work? Do you REALLY need them? I don't know and no you don't but it is easily the coolest thing that ever came with a
shoe. Speaking of accessories, what about that pamphlet that came with the Vs. Yep a 5-6 page pamphlet showing MJ and the newest warm ups was included. Ahh, the
good old days.
They sure don't make them like they used to. Quality and little extras, that's what makes a
shoe worth the money you pay. Can you still say that about every pair of
shoes you buy? Probably not.
The Air Jordan V single handedly brought
shoes into a new era of
design. Without them you would never have the XIs with their clear bottom,
accessories like the gaiter on the XV1s, or the reflective
mesh on the XIIIs. But then again you wouldn't have Ginger and yellow bottoms? Hmm revolutionary in more ways than you could ever imagine huh?
