Description: The
shoe that started it all, the Air Jordan I. Classic style, classic logo, classic
shoe.
In 1985, a skinny kid from North Carolina began the steps that would establish himself as one of the greatest basketball players to ever step on a basketball court. His
shoe of choice? The Air Jordan from
Nike. The Chicago Bulls didn't know that they were getting one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, a marketing juggernaut that would change the way we view athletic
shoes.
The colors were simple: White/Black/red and Black/red. Chicago team colors, but the basis for every Air Jordan
shoe for the next sixteen years. The Air Jordan I is simple, mirroring other popular
Nike basketball sneakers of the time: an eclectic mix of the
Nike Dunk, Terminator and the Air Force 1. However, the Wings
logo is what made the major difference: JORDAN wrapped in wings invoked beauty, and unparalled flights to the
rim. Michael's exploits in his rookie season were highlighted with the Air Jordan I, and drew numerous fines from the league for not having enough white on the
shoe.
Nike paid all the fines and resulted in increased attention to the
shoe.
There is a rumor of twenty three total colorways for the Air Jordan I, most of which are impossible to obtain today. Most were college issue colors that went to U. Washington, UNC, Georgetown, and other schools that were sponsored by
Nike. It is not confirmed that there are only twenty three colors, as new colors keep popping up in rare metallic colors. The rarest pair of the Air Jordan I was the black/gold patent
leather pair that was rumored to have only less than ten pairs in existence. A pair sold for $23,000+ in auction a few years ago, but buyers must beware as the Air Jordan I is one of the most counterfeited
shoes in the history of Nikes.
