" Cotton is one of the most important cash crops in China. China is one of the most important cotton production countries in the world since 1980s. China’s cotton yield has taken a leading position in the world. Since 1990s, cotton-sown area has maintained 5.5 million hectares. The cotton production regions are chiefly distributed in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtse River Basin area, the Yellow River Basin and Huaihe Rivers Basin. Currently, there are 27 provincial Cotton & Jute Corporations, 214 middle-city-level Cotton & Jute Corporations, over 800 county-level Cotton & Jute Corporations, 2,615 cotton gins and 13,767 cotton purchasing stations in China. The capacity of cotton production and ginning is 6 million tons. For the past decades, the Supply & Marketing Cooperatives have contributed innumerable personnel, material and capital to cotton production, purchasing, ginning, testing, warehousing and marketing. They are believed to make great progress in the reform of the cotton circulation system in the near future."
