" The world's main production areas for commercial ginger are currently China, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Thailand. The countries importing the biggest amounts are the United Kingdom, United States and Saudi Arabia. According to the FAO, ginger production is looking bright, because harvesting areas and production has increased since 1999, and is estimated to enlarge more in 2002. The harvesting areas of ginger in the world were 310,100, 319,751 and 321,732 hectares in 1999, 2000 and 2001, respectively. Overall production of ginger around the world has also increased. Production was 835,173 tons in 2001, compared with 812,372 tons in 2000 and 775,717 tons in 1999. The amount of Chinese ginger has increased gradually each year. Total ginger production in China was 201,128 million tons in 1999, 228,056 million tons in 2000 and 240,000 million tons in 2001."
