" At least 175 countries grow onions. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, there are an estimated 6.7 million acres of onions in the world, producing 105 billion pounds of onions each year. Approximately 8 percent of this global onion production is traded internationally. China ranks first in world onion production followed by India, USA, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia, Vietnam and Myanmar. There were 850.6 thousand hectares of onions in China, producing 18.035 million tons in 2004. Increased 232％ by 2003, by the same time global onion production increased only 65.8％. The main importers of Chinese onions are Russia, Bangladesh, USA, Malaysia, Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Canada."
