" Combined pear production in major reporting countries in marketing year (MY) 2005/06 is estimated to increase for the 10th consecutive season and reach a new record of 16 million tons. China’s pear industry, the world’s largest, continues to be a major force behind expected MY 2005/06 world record output. The pear industry in China has been developing fast since 80's. According to the state's statistics the acreage in 1996 was 931 thousand hm2 and the output had been reached up to 6.35million t, amounted to 47.8% of the world total production. Pear production in the major producing countries is estimated to reach a record 16 million tons. China accounts for about 60 per cent of the total crop, produced 11.2 million metric tons of pears during the marketing year 2006/06, up about 5 per cent over the previous year."
