slag
" The diverse uses of iron and steel slags, coproducts of the initiatives. Global granulated slag production has increased from around 84Mt in 2000 to around 110Mt in 2005, and is expected to reach 150Mt by 2010. Steel slags have many advantages over ‘traditional’ aggregates, including high skid resistance, and high resistance to abrasion. China, France, Italy, Japan, Turkey and Germany are the major exporting nations of GBFS, while a total of 10.7Mt of slag exports took place in 2004. However, it is estimated that a total of 12-13Mt of exports may be reached in 2005, with 18-20Mt of exports by 2010. The US is the largest single importer of GBFS, with around 2.3Mt required in 2005, and up to 4.5Mt by 2010. The slag was utilized in a comprehensive way in China, with 900,000 tons of waste iron and steel worth 160 million yuan recovered."
