Dexamethasone is used to treat many inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, e.g., rheumatoid arthritis. It is also given to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, to counteract certain side-effects of their antitumor treatment. Dexamethasone can augment the antiemetic effect of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists like ondansetron. It is also given in small amounts (usually 5-6 tablets) before and/or after some forms of dental surgery, such as the extraction of the wisdom teeth, an operation which often leaves the patient with puffy, swollen cheeks. After a 20 year-long competition with Tianjin Pharmaceutical Corporation, the world famous pharmaceutical enterprise Roussel of France has totally retreated from the dexamethasone market in China. It has to admit that the opponent is in a superior position in both quality and price. Dexamethansone produced by Roussel once held over 90％ of the Chinese market and 5％ of the Asian market. Three rounds of competition for the Chinese market have been launched between Roussel and Tianjin in these 20 years.
