China’s electric wire & cable industry has witnessed rapid development over the past years amid sustainable economic growth. At present, it has become the global leader by consumption of copper and aluminum, the fundamental raw materials for production of electric wires & cables. In 2003, the wire & cable industry consumed 1.90 million tons of copper, 65% of the country’s total consumption of the metal that year. In the years to come, the copper consumption by the industry is estimated to grow 8-10% year on year. The electric power industry, which consumes 40% of wires and cables, will have an immediate influence on the wire & cable industry. In line with China’s overall economic program, China will increase its power generating capacity by 35-40 million kilowatts between 2002 and 2020, and the power generation will grow 10% year on year. The figure will be 15% for 2003, and 16% for 2004. Fast expansion of capital construction and robust growth of the equipment manufacturing industry will create vast demand for wires and cables for equipment use, including winding wires. Industries of transportation, construction, home appliances and automobiles will grow 10% year on year, while the electromechanical manufacturing, shipbuilding and other industries will see an annual increase rate of 6% to 8%.
