According to statistics, there were more than 90 melamine producers in the world in 2003 with a total capacity of 1.3346 million t/a. China had around 70 producers and a total capacity of 300 000 t/a, accounting for 22% of the world total. Europe is the foremost melamine production region, with a capacity accounting for around 34% of the world total. The proportion of the capacity in the world total is 12% in the United States, 12% in Japan and 19% in other countries. China's demand for melamine has grown at a fast pace in the past decade. In the next five years, both production and demand will continue to grow. Melamine producers' efforts to get prices back up to a healthy level are meting with slow response and limited demand, as all marketers await an improvement in the finished product situation both at home and abroad.
