Description
Alpha-Cypermethrin is a pyrethroid insecticide and is the active isomer of cypermethrin, often considered to be more toxic and more effective in controlling a wide range of pests. Like cypermethrin, it works by affecting the nervous system of insects. It disrupts the normal functioning of nerve cells by altering the action of sodium channels, leading to continuous nerve firing, paralysis, and death.
Alpha-Cypermethrin is widely used in agriculture to control pests such as aphids, beetles, caterpillars, mosquitoes, flies, and many other insect species. It is also used in public health for vector control, including mosquito management. It has a strong contact and stomach action, making it effective when pests come into contact with or ingest it.
It is known for its high efficacy, and it generally has a long residual action, meaning it continues to protect treated areas from pests for a period after application. While alpha-cypermethrin is low in toxicity to humans and animals when used according to guidelines, it can be highly toxic to aquatic organisms and beneficial insects like bees, requiring careful application practices, especially in areas near water or flowering crops.
As with other pyrethroids, alpha-cypermethrin should be used as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) program to reduce the risk of pest resistance.
