Sawleaf palm extract is a herbal medicine extracted from the mature dry fruit of sawleaf palm, and its main active ingredient is fatty acid. At present, studies have shown that it has anti-tumor effect and is often used to treat male prostatic hypertrophy.
Saw palmetto extract is an extract of the fruit of Serenoa repens. It is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols.
Saw palm is a rare medicinal plant of the palm family found in the southeastern United States, from South Carolina to southern Mississippi and Louisiana, to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico in tropical and subtropical coastal sandy plains.  Sawed leaves are evergreen shrubs, 3 -- 5m tall, palmately, deeply lobed, 40 -- 90cm wide.  Petiole and leaf along the long thorns, "saw leaf" hence the name.  They grow 3 to 7 leaves a year, and each leaf lives for about 2 years.  Inflorescences of Buddha flame, 0.5 ~ 0.75 m long, each can open 5 inflorescences, generally open 1 ~ 3.  Each inflorescence has thousands of flowers, small white ones.  Bisexual flowers 5 -- 6mm long with 3 white petals.  Each flower has six stamens and one pistil.  Single drupe berrylike, elliptic, 5 -- 13cm in diameter, bluish green when ripe.
