Gate valves are named after the gate-shaped disc that controls the flow of fluids. The disc is raised or lowered by a threaded stem, allowing for the opening or closing of the valve. When the gate is fully raised, a straight path is created for the fluid to flow through, resulting in minimal resistance and pressure drop.
