Stainless steel is classified into five types based on its metallic structure: austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel, austenitic ferritic (duplex) stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel, and precipitation hardening stainless steel. Application scope:
Stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and strength and toughness over a wide temperature range, making it widely used in industries such as heavy industry, light industry, daily necessities, and building decoration. However, it is important to choose different types of stainless steel for different usage environments.
The following are the characteristics and application areas of the main stainless steel grades
301: Compared with 304 steel, it has less Cr and Ni content, and its tensile strength and hardness increase during cold processing. It is non-magnetic, but it has magnetism after cold processing. Usage: Train, aircraft, conveyor belt, vehicle, bolt, nut, spring, screen mesh.
301L: On the basis of 301 steel, reduce the C content and improve the resistance of the weld to grain boundary corrosion; By adding N element to compensate for the insufficient strength caused by the decrease in C content, the strength of the steel is ensured. Usage: Railway vehicle frame and external decorative materials.
304: As a widely used steel, it has good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, low-temperature strength, and mechanical properties; Good hot working properties such as stamping and bending, no heat treatment hardening phenomenon (non-magnetic, operating temperature -196 ºC~800 ºC). Usage: Medical equipment, building materials, chemistry, ship parts, automotive parts, food industry, household items (tableware, cabinets, indoor pipelines, water heaters, bathtubs, etc.), agriculture.
304L: As a low-carbon 304 steel, its corrosion resistance is similar to that of 304 steel in general, but its resistance to grain boundary corrosion is excellent after welding or stress relief; It can maintain good corrosion resistance even without heat treatment, with a usage temperature of -196 ºC~800 ºC. Usage: Used for outdoor machines in the chemical, coal, and petroleum industries that require high resistance to grain boundary corrosion, as well as heat-resistant building materials and parts that have difficulty in heat treatment.
316L: As a low-carbon series of 316 steel, it has the same characteristics as 316 steel and excellent resistance to grain boundary corrosion. Usage: In corrosive media containing chloride ions, it has higher corrosion resistance than 304 and 304L. Suitable for seawater desalination and water industry.
321: Adding Ti element to 304 steel to prevent grain boundary corrosion; Suitable for use at temperatures ranging from 430 ºC to 900 ºC. Usage: Aircraft, exhaust pipes, boiler steam drums.
