Autotransformer is a kind of specail transformer, of which primary and secondary winding are the same and without insulation. According to the structure, it can also be subdivided into voltage changable type and fixed type.

1.Since the calculated capacity of the autotransformer is less than the rated capacity, the main dimensions of the autotransformer are smaller under the same rated capacity, and the effective materials (silicon steel sheet and conductor) and structural materials (steel) are reduced accordingly, thus reducing the cost. The reduction of effective materials makes the copper loss and iron loss decrease correspondingly, so the efficiency of autotransformer is high. At the same time, due to the reduction of the main size and the mass, it is possible to manufacture a single transformer with larger capacity under the allowable transportation conditions. However, the above advantages are usually obvious only when k ≤ 2.
2.Since the short-circuit impedance of autotransformer is smaller than that of double winding transformer, the voltage change is smaller, but the short-circuit current is larger
3.Due to the direct connection between the primary and secondary of the autotransformer, when the high-voltage side overvoltage occurs, it will cause serious overvoltage on the low-voltage side. In order to avoid this danger, both primary and secondary windings must be installed with lightning arresters.
4.Autotransformer is mostly used as motor step-down starting under low voltage.
