Sodium chondroitin sulfate is a white to grayish white powder. Odorless and odorless. It has hygroscopicity and can absorb 16% to 17% moisture. Easily soluble in water. Difficult to dissolve in organic solvents such as acetone and ethanol. The aqueous solution is viscous, and the addition of acid or alkali results in a decrease in viscosity. It has ion exchange properties and can form various metal salts with cations to precipitate. Hydrolyze with 5mol/L hydrochloric acid at 37 ºC for 3 hours, and lose sulfuric acid to form chondroitin. Sodium chondroitin sulfate is extracted from shark bone.
