Aggregate:

Aggregate refers to the stone, sand, and ash that are used to vibrate, compact, and bind together with cement. A good aggregate is free from chemicals, clay, and organic material. It should bond well with the cement paste without reacting with it. For a dense block, it is recommended to use an aggregate with evenly graded particles ranging from fine dust to larger stones of around 9mm. Blending different aggregates often produces the best results.

Cement:

It is recommended to use 42.5 MPA (or higher) ordinary Portland cement (OPC) for the product mix. If this grade is not available, a higher percentage of 32.5 MPA must be used. By conducting trials with different aggregates, you can minimize the cement content and reduce costs. Store cement in a dry place, off the floor, and use it within three months of manufacture. Only use cement from a well-known, quality brand and avoid using cement with lumps.

Cement sets when mixed with water through a series of hydration chemical reactions. The different constituents slowly hydrate and crystallize, giving the cement its strength. Immersion in warm water can speed up the setting process, which can take anywhere from twenty minutes for initial set to twenty-four hours or more for final set.

Water:

Only clean, clear potable water should be used in the manufacture of blocks and bricks. Organic material in water can prevent the cement from setting, and chemicals or impurities can affect the strength of the end product. Avoid using salty or brackish water, and it is advisable to test the water for impurities.
