Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is an organic compound with the chemical formula C14H10O4. It is a white crystalline powder at room temperature with a slight smell of bitter almonds. It is soluble in benzene, ether, and slightly soluble in ethanol and water.
Chemical properties and uses
Benzoyl peroxide is a strong oxidant, mainly used in the production of polymers. It can be used as a polymerization initiator for monomers such as polyvinyl chloride, unsaturated polyesters, and polyacrylates, and can also be used as a cross-linking agent for polyethylene and a rubber vulcanizer. In addition, benzoyl peroxide is also used as a bleaching agent for flour, oils and waxes, as well as a cosmetic additive.
Safety issues
Benzoyl peroxide can make the appearance of flour and its products more pleasant when used reasonably, and has a bactericidal and mildew-proof effect. However, excessive benzoyl peroxide can have adverse effects on health, including increasing the burden on the liver and producing toxic substances. In addition, benzoyl peroxide is highly irritating and corrosive. If the skin comes into contact with benzoyl peroxide, symptoms such as burning, stinging, skin redness, peeling, and ulcers may occur. Therefore, special attention should be paid to safety measures during use.
