Polyquaternium-1 is a very safe preservative, which shows very low acute toxicity in rats.Polyquaternium-1 is slightly toxic orally (LD50> 4.47 ml/l at 40% active in rats). Polyquaternium-1 is not irritating to skin at 40%. The product is not a skin sensitizer and is non-mutagenic.
Polyquaternium-1 is a detergent-type preservative derived from BAK,also named as Polidronium Chloride,PQ-1.Polyquaternium-1 is formulated in the mid of 1980s by Alcon as a preservative for contact lens storage solutions.Nowadays,it is being increasingly used as a presverative in ophthalmic drops for glaucoma, artificial tear solutions and top cosmetic formuations.
Polyquaternium-1 is a cationic polymer prepared by the controlled polymerization of dimethylamine and bis-dichlorobutene, end capped with tris-b-Hydroxyethylamine.
