What is Sponge Spicule?
Sponges are simple multicellular organisms that have lived in the ocean or freshwater environments for 200 million years, their main skeleton and support being the fibrous siliceous spicules. It has grown to more than 10,000 species, accounting for one in 15 marine animals, and is a vast marine 'family', most of which live in the intertidal zone at depths of up to 8,500 metres (28,000 feet). Most sponges live in the ocean, but about 20 species of needle shaped sponges (also known as freshwater sponges) also live in freshwater, usually in clean lakes and mild streams. They have a soft structure and look similar to underwater plants such as kelp.
