Glass optical fiber itself is an inorganic material, which is resistant to temperature higher than 500ºC.
A light guide rod is made by heating and melting a bundle of optic fibers in parallel, protected by a tube made of dark glass to prevent light leakage. The rod can be used both for light conduction and for image transmission. It can be bent to a desired angle under heat.
The rod can be drawn to a tapered rod, with aperture angle changed to reduce the scattering angle of light rays and increase light intensity for illumination.
Special type rods are usually custom-made with different terminal shape, ending angle or/and special apparence.
Main application:
Light conducting element for dental light curing unit, and medical treatment by semi-con
ducting laser; Image transmitting element with low resolution; fiber taper to raise luminous intensity.
