Mechanical pigs used in pipelines are mainly cup pigs and two-way straight plate pigs. Deformation of cup pig is generally 3%~5% of pipe diameter. Its carrying capacity is better than that of the two-way straight plate pig. Because the cup pig runs in a fixed direction in the pipeline. Therefore, it is mainly used to remove the accumulated liquid, dust, and other pollutants in the pipeline.

Pig selection is a multi-objective and multi-factor decision-making problem. The user shall mainly determine the mechanical strength, wear resistance, adsorption, the reactivity of the transmission medium in the pipeline, and the carrying capacity of the pig, as follows:
- Pigging target. Is the pipeline cleaning liquid or solid impurities and dirt
- Use the degree of the pipeline. The aging degree and service life of the pipeline determine the characteristics of pigging contents.
- Pig interference. This requires the user to consider the pipe curvature and diameter.
- Pigging process. Drive pressure range value provided by the pipeline. And the running speed of the pig and the maximum running distance of the pig.
- Size of accessories for pig installation. Comprehensively consider the thickness of wax deposits in the pipeline.
