Volcanic rock, also known as lava rock or pumice, is a remarkable product of nature formed during volcanic eruptions. When molten magma rapidly cools, gases trapped inside expand and escape, creating a porous, vesicular structure. The pore volume can account for more than 50% of the rock's total volume, making it lightweight and even buoyant in water.
Composed primarily of silica, alumina, iron oxide, and calcium oxide, volcanic rock exhibits excellent physical and chemical properties. It is highly resistant to compression, possesses good thermal insulation, sound absorption, and fireproof qualities. Additionally, it is resistant to both acids and alkalis, non-polluting, and non-radioactive.
Volcanic rock comes in a variety of colors, ranging from black and dark green to deep gray, purple-red, and even pink, due to differences in mineral composition and oxidation states. This natural material is widely distributed in regions with frequent volcanic activity, such as the Circum-Pacific volcanic belt and the Mid-Ocean Ridge volcanic belt.
