| handcrafted mixed clay coffee tea cup mug withstand high temperature made in Jingdezhen China sewed the central thread in the history of ceramics, and its influence greatly affected the work of other Far Eastern countries, for example the graceful, thin-walled porcelain forms of the Korean Koryo and Yi dynasty from the 10th century onwards. Such forms passed through the Far East and into Europe. By the 17th century there was an established fashion in Europe for collecting Chinese porcelain, which was prominently displayed in many stately homes within "porcelain rooms". Ideas range from a thrown cup and saucer, a hand-formed interpretation of the human figure and a press-moulded jug with sprigged decoration to slipcast vessels with distinctive crackled surface of raku. Each project is original to its creator and gives valuable insights into how to successfully combine the many ideas and techniques available. |
