Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a substituted diamine. EDTA is a chelating agent that can bind to divalent metal ions such as Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, etc. It is soluble in sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and ammonia solutions, in boiling water, slightly in cold water, and insoluble in ethanol and general organic solvents.
Application
1. Used in pulp and paper production to improve bleaching & preserve the brightness
2. Used in cleaning products, primarily for de-scaling.
3. Used in chemical processing; polymer stabilization & oil production.
4. Used in agriculture in fertilizers.
5. Used in water treatment to control water hardness and prevent scale.
6. Used in the textile industry.
