The main role of gibberellins
1. Promote stem elongation and growth
The physiological effect of gibberellins is to promote plant growth and significantly increase plant height. This is mainly because gibberellins stimulate plant cell elongation and promote cell division.
2. Replace plants' needs for light, low temperature, etc.
The differentiation of flower buds of some higher plants is affected by day length and temperature. For example, biennial plants require a certain number of days of low-temperature treatment in order to bloom. If gibberellin is applied to these non-vernalized plants, flowering can be induced without low temperature, and the effect is obvious.
3. Promote germination and break dormancy
For seeds that require light and low temperature to germinate, gibberellin can replace light and low temperature to break dormancy. In addition, gibberellin also has a certain effect on releasing dormancy, mainly because gibberellin can hinder inter-cell dormancy release signaling. The callose of plasmodesmata is degraded, allowing the signaling substance to be transported to the apical meristem, thus releasing dormancy.
4. Promote the differentiation of male flowers
For monoecious plants, the proportion of male flowers increases after treatment with gibberellin; for male plants of dioecious plants, if treated with gibberellin, male flowers will also bloom.
