Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a type of heterocyclic organic compound. It is one of the strongest polar ethers and is used as a moderately polar solvent in chemical reactions and extractions. It is a colourless, clear liquid with an ether-like odour. It has a relative density of 0.89, a molecular weight of 72.11, a melting point of -108.5°C, a boiling point of 66°C, a flash point of -17.2°C, and a self-ignition point of 321.1°C. Its refractive index is 1.407.
Tetrahydrofuran is a colorless, low-viscosity liquid with an ether-like odor.Tetrahydrofuran and water are partially miscible at room temperature. Some unscrupulous reagent dealers take advantage of this fact to make huge profits by mixing tetrahydrofuran reagent with water.Tetrahydrofuran easily turns into peroxide during storage.Therefore, commercial tetrahydrofuran often uses BHT, that is, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol to prevent oxidation.Tetrahydrofuran can be stored in a dark place with sodium hydroxide in a sealed bottle.
