Sodium carbonate (also known as washing soda, soda ash and soda crystals) is the inorganic compound with the formula Na2CO3 and its various hydrates. All forms are white, odourless, water-soluble salts that yield alkaline solutions in water.
Application
a.As a cleansing agent for domestic purposes like washing clothes. Sodium carbonate is a component of many dry soap powders.
b.It is used for lowering the hardness of water(such as Water softening).
c.It is used in the manufacture of glass, soap, and paper (such as Glass manufacture).
d.It is used in the manufacture of sodium compounds like borax.
e.Sodium carbonate has uses in food additive and cooking
f.Sodium carbonate is also used as a relatively strong base in various fields. For example, it is used as a pH regulator.
g.Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) or baking soda, also a component in fire extinguishers, is often generated from sodium carbonate.
h.Sodium carbonate is used by the brick industry as a wetting agent to reduce the amount of water needed to extrude the clay.
i.Sodium carbonate is also used in the processing and tanning of animal hides.
Storage
