It is typically produced by reacting aluminum hydroxide or bauxite with sulfuric acid. The reaction is carefully controlled to ensure the desired purity and quality of the final product.
3. Physical Properties
It has a relatively high melting point of around 770 °C (decomposes). In its anhydrous form, it is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb moisture from the air. The hydrated forms are more common in industrial applications.
4. Chemical Reactivity
Aluminum sulfate is acidic in nature due to the hydrolysis of aluminum ions in water. It can react with various substances, such as alkalis, to form insoluble aluminum hydroxide precipitates.
