Ivermectin is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent derived from the fermentation of the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis. It is primarily used to treat various parasitic infections in both humans and animals.
Mechanism of Action: Ivermectin works by binding to specific chloride channels in the nerve and muscle cells of parasites, leading to paralysis and death of the parasites. It is particularly effective against nematodes (roundworms) and ectoparasites (external parasites) such as lice and mites.
Uses:
Human Medicine: Ivermectin is registered for the treatment of several diseases, including:
- Onchocerciasis (river blindness)
- Lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis)
- Strongyloidiasis (a type of intestinal infection)
- Scabies
- Recently, it has also been used for head lice and other off-label uses.
