Ketoconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal imidazole, which interferes with the activity of fungal cytochrome P-450 with high selectivity, thereby inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol in fungal cell membranes. It is effective in the treatment of both shallow and deep fungal infections, and can inhibit the growth of fungi and the transformation from spores to mycelium to prevent further infections. It has antifungal effects on Candida, Fonsecaea, Coccidioides, Histoplasma, Sporothrix and Trichophyton.
