What is Verteporfin
Verteporfin is activated by light to form cytotoxic products in an aerobic environment. During this process, the porphyrin transfers the absorbed energy to oxygen, forming a highly reactive and short-lived monooxygen. Single oxygen destroys various biological structures within its diffusion range. This process results in local vascular atresia, cell destruction, and, under certain circumstances, cell death. In plasma, verteporfin is mainly carried by low density lipoproteins (LDL). Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin is selective.
On the one hand, it is the selection of the light irradiation site, on the other hand, the expression of LDL receptors in rapidly proliferating cells including choroidal neovascular endothelial cells is enhanced, so that rapidly proliferating cells can selectively and rapidly take up and accumulate verteporfin . The uptake of verteporfin by choroidal neovascularization is more rapid and selective than that of the retinal pigment epithelium, while other ocular structures contain less drug. Therefore, choroidal neovascularization can be selectively destroyed.
