Rapamycin a triene macrolide antibiotic, exhibits antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and immunosuppressive properties. It inhibits T-cell activation and proliferation, suppresses p70 S6 kinase activation, and strongly binds to FK-506 binding proteins. Additionally, rapamycin targets the mammalian target of rapamycin, a protein involved in signaling pathways that promote tumor growth. By binding to the receptor protein FKBP12, the rapamycin FKBP12 complex interacts with mTOR, preventing its engagement with downstream target proteins and thereby inhibiting tumor progression.
