Pregabalin is a medication with the CAS number 148553-50-8, primarily used to treat various conditions associated with neuropathic pain, epilepsy, and anxiety disorders. It is a structural analog of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and was initially developed as an anticonvulsant drug . It works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures and also affects chemicals in the brain that send pain signals across the nervous system .
The drug is available in oral capsule form, oral solution, and oral extended-release tablet. Pregabalin is used to treat pain caused by fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain in people with diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), herpes zoster (post-herpetic neuralgia), or spinal cord injury. It is also used with other medications to treat partial-onset seizures in adults and children aged at least 1 month .
