Operating Principle of a Single-Screw CompressorThis ingenious device operates through the synergy of a pair of intermeshing helical rotors, fondly referred to as the male and female rotors. Each rotor boasts several concave teeth, working in harmony as they rotate in opposite directions. With a precision gap of only 5 to 10 microns existing between the rotors and between the casing and the rotors, absolute efficiency is guaranteed. Typically driven by an engine or electric motor, the main rotor (male rotor) leads the charge. Meanwhile, the female rotor is powered by either an oil film-courtesy of oil injection-or synchronized gears, ensuring a seamless metal-free contact during the drive. As the rotors revolve, the grooves they possess fill with gas upon encountering the intake port. Once rotation ensues, the rotor grooves become sealed by the casing wall, thus forming a compression chamber. At this point, lubricating oil is generously injected into the chamber performing a trio of tasks: sealing, cooling, and lubricating. With continued rotation, the chamber's volume diminishes, compressing the gas into an oil-gas mélange, which ultimately exits through the exhaust port-culminating the cycle of intake-compression-exhaust.
