Characters	Appearance: white or almost white, crystalline powder.
Characters	Solubility: soluble in water, practically insoluble in ethanol (96 per cent) When heated in the dry state or in solution , it gradually changes into sodium carbonate.
Identification	To 5mL of solution S (see Tests) add 0.1mL of phenolphthalein solution R. A pale pink colour is produced. Heat ; gas is evolved and the solution becomes red.
	It gives the reaction of carbonates and bicarbonates.
	Solution S gives reaction of sodium.
Appearance of solution	Solution S is clear and colourless.
Carbonates	The pH of freshly prepared solution S is not greater than 8.6.
Chlorides	Not more than 150ppm.
Sulfates	Not more than 150ppm.
Ammonium	Not more than 20ppm.
Calcium	Not more than 100ppm.
Iron	Not more than 20ppm.
Assay	99.0 per cent to 101.0 per cent .
