What is Iodine CAS 7553-56-2?

Iodine is a shiny purple-black crystal, which can sublimate slowly. Gaseous iodine shows purple color and has a pungent odor. Iodine has a powerful bactericidal effect, killing bacterial spores, fungi, viruses and protozoa. Iodine mainly exerts its bactericidal effect in the form of molecules (I2), which is based on the principle of iodination and oxidation of the active groups of bacteriophage proteins and binding to the amino groups of the proteins to cause protein denaturation and inhibition of the metabolic enzyme system of the bacteriophage.
