Sphincterotome are used for endoscopic cannulation of biliary ductal system and sphincterotomy. Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) require selecytive cannulation of the common bile and pancreatic duct. To facilitae selective cannulation, sphincterotomes can be used.
After the cut hase been made then then desired endoscopic accesory can be inserted through it, toward the common bile duct.
