The quincke needle is a sharp, beveled, hollow needle. Quincke-Babcock needle is a medium-gauge cannula with a short, sharp bevel and matching stylet, with the tip ground to match the bevel of the cannula. Labat's theory was that the shorter bevel acted as a wedge, pushing tissues aside rather than cutting them, and therefore minimising damage to the dura.
