Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is a colorless, odorless, odorless, non-toxic non-combustible gas with a molecular weight of 146.06 and a density of 6.139 g/l, approximately 5 times that of air. It is one of the best materials with known chemical stability, and its inertness is similar to that of nitrogen. It has excellent thermal stability and does not decompose even at temperatures above 500°C in pure form.
SF6 has excellent electrical insulation and arc extinguishing properties. Under the same conditions, its insulation capacity is 2.5 times more than that of air and nitrogen, and its arc extinguishing capacity is 100 times that of air. The melting point of sulfur hexafluoride is -50.8°C, which can be used as a special refrigerant in the temperature range of -45-0°C, and because of its good heat resistance, it is a stable high-temperature heat carrier. Sulfur hexafluoride has been widely used in power, electronics, and electrical industries and laser, medical, meteorology, refrigeration, firefighting, chemical, aerospace, nonferrous metallurgy, and physics research due to these and other excellent features.
