Acts by inhibiting cholinesterase, causing strong contraction of the worm muscles and resulting in spasmodic paralysis; but does not cause roundworm commotion. It is a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent with significant nicotinic-like activity, which also inhibits cholinesterase and causes accumulation of acetylcholine, leading to spasmodic paralysis of the worms and their expulsion from the body; in addition, it depolarizes individual cells of the worms, increases the frequency of peak potential issuance, and also increases muscle tone, causing the worms to lose their voluntary activity.
In clinical practice, it is mainly used for the treatment of ascariasis, pinworms, hookworms, and whipworms.
