Camptothecin is isolated from the bark and branches of the Camptothecus tree (Camtothecus japonica, the tree of happiness) produced in China, and was used in the early days of traditional Chinese medicine to treat cancer.

Camptothecin has significant anticancer properties in preliminary clinical trials, has low solubility, and contains a high degree of adverse drug reaction profile. Medicinal chemists have in turn exploited these properties to develop a variety of synthetic camptothecins and various derivatives for added benefit.
