Pocket air filters trap more airborne contaminants than non-pleated panel filters and need to be changed less often. Also known as bag filters, they are installed in HVAC systems to improve indoor air quality in auto shops, data centers, food and beverage plants, industrial sites, and schools. These filters are suitable for applications where air is constantly flowing through the filter since they may deposit some captured material back into the air stream when they deflate. Pocket air filters are directional and should be mounted with their pockets oriented vertically. This limits redistribution of trapped particles if the filters deflate. A filter's MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating measures how efficiently a filter traps contaminants in the air stream based on the size of the particles it can effectively capture. The higher a filter's MERV rating is, the more effectively it traps small particles.
 

The terms bag filter and pocket filter are often used interchangeably - but there is a difference between these two industrial air filters.
Typically, a bag filter has a metal frame (galvanized steel or aluminum) with anywhere from 3-6 pockets of micro glass or synthetic filtration media. The 'pockets' of a bag filter are not 'rigid' and sometimes have a tendency to collapse in the air stream, especially under high airflow.
Engineered Filtration Systems (EFS) has a soft pocket bag filters which is uniquely designed with an extruded aluminum frame for added durability. In addition, the seams of the pockets are ultrasonically sealed, as opposed to sewn like most bag filters, to prevent leakage and reduce tearing. Bag filters come in a range of efficiencies from MERV 8 to MERV 14.
