Hardwood, generally 3/8" to 3/4" thick, should only be installed above grade. Conversely, laminate flooring can be installed above or below grade and over nearly any existing surface. Given that laminate is a wood product, it is not recommended for moist environments like bathrooms, washrooms, saunas, enclosed porches, or verandas, nor in areas that require wet-mopping. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause the laminate core to warp or swell. In some cases, with specific installation techniques, laminate flooring can be installed in bathrooms where water does not remain on the surface for prolonged periods. For bathroom installations, it's advisable to apply a light bead of glue to the tongue of the planks in areas prone to spills, and promptly mop up and dry any spills.
