Red crystal or brownish red powder, soluble in water; slightly soluble in ethanol; insoluble in ether, concentrated aqueous solution is dark brown red, dilute solution is orange with green fluorescence. The ethanol solution has a strong green fluorescence. Low toxicity. Used as adsorption indicator, biological dye.
