Chemical Properties: 10% aqueous solution is clear and transparent at 25°C. It is stable to acid, alkali solution and hard water.
Physical state: usually colourless transparent liquid or white paste (25°C), also described as milky white oil or paste in some sources. Melting point 41~45°C, boiling point 100°C.
Production methods and raw materials
Production method: It is mainly produced by condensation method, using dodecyl alcohol or octadecyl alcohol and ethylene oxide as raw materials, in the presence of sodium hydroxide catalyst, condensation reaction is obtained.
Raw material: dodecyl alcohol or octadecyl alcohol, ethylene oxide, sodium hydroxide (catalyst).
Uses and applications
Emulsifier: Used as emulsifier in cosmetics and ointment production, it has excellent emulsifying, dispersing and wetting properties for mineral oil and animal and vegetable oils. It is also the emulsifier for making O/W type emulsion.
Detergent: As a non-ionic surfactant, it plays the role of emulsification, foaming and decontamination, and is the main active ingredient of hand soap, laundry detergent, shower gel, washing powder, detergent and metal cleaner.
Textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries: as textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries, it plays the role of emulsification, and is used for emulsifying silicone oil, penetrating agent, levelling agent, polypropylene oil agent, etc.
Paper-making auxiliaries: as deinking agent, blanket purging agent, de-resinning agent, it helps to improve the cleanliness and production efficiency of paper.
Other applications: It is also widely used in many industrial fields such as pesticide emulsifiers, crude oil emulsion breakers, lubricant emulsifiers, paints and coatings, papermaking, pesticides and chemical fertilisers, dry cleaning, textile treatment and oil field extraction. In addition, it can also be used as solvent, solubiliser, dispersant, etc. for the preparation of various emulsions, paints, inks and adhesives.
