Glyphosate, chemical name is N-(phosphomethyl)glycine, chemical formula is C3H8N05P is a systemic broad-spectrum herbicide, belonging to the category of organophosphorus compounds.

Glyphosate was developed and marketed by the former Monsanto Company of the United States (now Bayer Crop Science of Germany) in 1972. It is the world's largest-selling herbicide.

Chemical properties and mechanism of action

Glyphosate dissolves the wax layer on the surface of the leaves, branches and stems of weeds, and the drug effect quickly enters the plant conduction system, hindering the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids, especially inhibiting 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSP synthase), resulting in the accumulation of shikimate in the organism, thereby causing the weeds to die.

Glyphosate is metabolized very slowly in higher plants, with high operating performance and slow degradation performance, so it has a good control effect on perennial weeds.

Application areas
Glyphosate is widely used in chemical weed control in orchards, mulberry gardens, tea gardens, rubber plantations, grassland renewal, forest fire roads, railways, highway wastelands and no-till land. In addition, glyphosate is also used for weed control of glyphosate-resistant genetically modified crops.
The global market demand for glyphosate is large, with sales reaching more than US$5.3 billion in 2018, accounting for about 42% of the sales of the top 15 herbicides.

Glyphosate is considered a low-toxic herbicide that has a certain irritation to the eyes and skin, but does not accumulate in animals, has no teratogenic, mutagenic, or carcinogenic effects, has low toxicity to fish and aquatic organisms, and is non-toxic to bees and birds.
