5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid. It acts as a precursor of serotonin (5-HT) in the body (and in turn as a precursor of melatonin). Some double-blind studies have shown that 5-HTP increases serotonin levels in the brain, improves depression and melatonin production, improves sleep quality, and suppresses appetite.
