Lignosulfonate in sulfite pulping waste liquor can be used as adhesive, chelating agent, industrial detergent, water softener, emulsifier and emulsion stabilizer, tannin supplement, cement additive, oil drilling dispersant and soil stabilizer. In addition, vanillin and vanillic acid can also be prepared from lignosulfonic acid. Lignin from kraft pulping effluent can be used to prepare sulfur-containing aliphatic compounds, such as dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethyl sulfone and dimethyl sulfide.
