A simple winch consists of a spool and a lever. Winches are the basis for equipment such as trailers, steam shovels, and elevators. Complex winches have gear assemblies and can be driven by electric, hydraulic, pneumatic or internal combustion engines. It may include an electromagnetic brake and/or a mechanical brake or a ratchet and pawl that prevents the pawl from releasing unless it is retracted. The rope can be wrapped around the winch. When trimming a rope on a sailboat, the crew turns the winch handle with one hand while pulling on the tail end with the other hand to maintain tension during the turn.
